2008 Honda Superbike Classic Barber Motorsports Park, Alabama

April 2008

Renee' and I attended the Honda Superbike Classic at Barber again this year.  We've now decided to make this a yearly weekend trip due to the great track, perfect weather, and this being the closest AMA racing available for us.  Having recently participated in my first track day at Barber, I have a new appreciation for the skill level of these riders.  Here are a few images I captured this year:

Duhamel's 1000RR

Neil Hodgson's 1000RR

United States Marine Corps rider pit area - This was their
first year participating in the races.

Ben Spies' turbo Supra

The builder was with the car and claimed it was at around 3200 pounds and over 700 RWHP!

I'm not sure if this car belonged to Jamie Hacking, or one of his family members, but it was a nice one.

I was surprised to see only a single front rotor

HRC Kitted 2008 1000RR

Said to add 23% more power - but costs about $30K!!!

We watched some of the racing from Honda's HRCA Hospitality tent.  It's a good view and shaded with drinks provided to HRCA members and one guest.  It's an OK deal, but again Honda had nothing on the Ducati tent.

2008 CBR1000RR with Honda accessories - the Honda accessories consisted of carbon fiber look tank protectors, tail protector, and a seat cowl....$629 was the total which seemed VERY pricey for these pieces.

Marine Corp vendor area - they had a pull up contest and the pilot of the the bike was present.  The Marines are providing him 50% of his travel expenses and have actually given him orders to attend these races so he isn't having to use up his leave time, but he's paying for the bike and all the parts out of his own pocket.

This was probably my favorite part of the weekend.  The Red Bull Rookies Cup was present and raced at this event.  This was the first time these 13-16 year old kids had raced in front of such a large crowd.

I fully expected them to come out like little league weaving all over the track, but these kids meant business.  These little KTM 125s were hitting 140 in the straights and the racing was very tight.

This is Hayden Gillim with Trish and Renee.  Hayden Gillim is one of the Rookie Cup riders and is cousin to the MotoGP rider Nicky Hayden.  Not surprisingly his racing number is 69.

I picked this 1999 Honda Accord Ex Sedan 4 cylinder Auto  up as a daily driver due to gas getting so expensive.  It was a cherry car, one owner, garage kept and is in great condition.  The best part, I drove 453.3 miles on a single tank of gas!  This Accord was a great buy and had only 78K miles on it.  This will be the travel vehicle for sure and keeps the miles off my 4Runner.
